What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a complementary healthcare that does not use drugs or medicine. Chiropractors believe in restoring your body’s natural power to heal by removing interference from the nervous system. Removing this interference normally involves a chiropractic adjustment. An adjustment is a quick thrust to a specially selected joint to allow more movement, stimulate the nerves, and relax the surrounding tissues. When your tissues become more relaxed you may experience less pain, more range of motion, and the ability to perform activities that were bothersome before.

Dr. Harkins will always let you know if another healthcare professional is more appropriate or should be seen in conjunction with your care.

What is Acupuncture?

Your body has channels of energy (chi) that flow through it. Sometimes these channels can either have excessive or restricted energy flow. Tiny needles are inserted into the skin to restore the energy flow.

Scientifically, when the needles are inserted into the body, signals are sent to your brain. Your brain will then send endorphins(your body’s natural pain killers) and immune enhancing agents to “investigate” the insertion area. This investigation may help alleviate pain and other disorders.

What can chiropractic and acupuncture help with?

Many people seek a chiropractor because they have pain in their neck or back. Chiropractors can also address pain in the extremities, such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hips, knees, and ankles. Some of my patients have also experienced relieve from headaches, migraines, sport injuries, menstrual cramps, trouble sleeping, pregnancy pains, constipation, allergies/sinus pressure, and a lot more. Many patients decide to continue care after the pain is gone to maintain a healthy spine and body. This may help avoid or reduce the risk for future injuries.

Does chiropractic hurt?

Chiropractic care should never hurt. Some people may feel sore after a chiropractic adjustment, especially their first or second time. A majority of people feel relief or less pressure. If at any time you are uncomfortable please let the staff and doctor know. Techniques can always be modified to suite your needs.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is actually very gentle. Some people state they can feel a pinch or itch when the needle is inserted. The needles are smaller than a safety pin and designed to glide past tissue, allowing more comfort. Again, if at any time you feel uncomfortable please let the doctor know.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different and everybody has different healing times. The amount of treatment all depends on your body, the type of injury, how long you have been dealing with the condition, and the activities you do on a daily basis. Treatment plans will be discussed after your initial evaluation.
